Most clogged drains clear with simple tools used in the right order: hot water and a plunger first, then removing and cleaning the stopper or the trap under the sink, and finally a hand drain snake. That covers how to unclog a drain in most kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, tubs and showers. Chemical drain cleaners are a last resort, and they rule out plunging afterward. When several fixtures back up at once, the blockage is in the main line, and a plumber’s visit costs $150 to $800 for that job against $111 to $451 for a single drain.
| Method | Works best on | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water and dish soap | Grease starting to build up in a kitchen sink | Does little against hair or solid objects; very hot water can soften plastic pipe joints |
| Cup plunger | Sinks, tubs and showers with a flat drain | Needs the overflow hole sealed and enough water to cover the cup |
| Flange plunger | Toilets | Loses suction if the flange does not seat in the bowl outlet |
| Stopper and strainer cleaning | Hair clogs in bathroom sinks, tubs and showers | Only reaches the top few inches of the drain |
| Cleaning the P trap | Sink clogs from grease, food or small objects | Needs a bucket and care with old slip nuts and washers |
| Hand drain snake or auger | Clogs deeper in the branch line | Can scratch porcelain; does not reach a main line blockage |
| Enzyme drain treatment | Slow drains and routine upkeep | Works over hours or days, not on a full blockage |
| Chemical drain cleaner | Organic clogs that resist other methods | Caustic, harms some pipes, and makes plunging dangerous afterward |
Step by step: clearing a sink, tub or shower
- Removing standing water. A cup or small container empties the basin so the plunger and the drain opening can be seen.
- Pulling the stopper. Bathroom sink pop up stoppers lift out or unscrew from the pivot rod under the sink. Tub and shower strainers unscrew. Hair wrapped around them is the most common clog in a bathroom.
- Plunging. The overflow hole gets covered with a wet rag, a few inches of water go into the basin, and the cup plunger works with firm, straight strokes for about a minute before lifting off sharply. On a double kitchen sink, the second drain is plugged during plunging.
- Cleaning the trap. With a bucket under the curved P trap, the two slip nuts loosen by hand or with pliers, the trap comes off and gets cleaned, and the washers go back in the same order.
- Snaking the line. A hand snake feeds into the drain pipe behind the trap, turning as it goes until it hits the clog, then turns further to break it up or hook it. Pulling it back slowly brings the debris out.
- Flushing. Running hot tap water for a minute confirms the drain flows freely and rinses out loose material.

Unclogging a toilet
A toilet needs a flange plunger, the type with a soft sleeve that seals into the bowl outlet. Gentle first strokes push the air out, then firmer strokes move the clog. If the bowl threatens to overflow, the water supply valve behind the toilet shuts off the refill. A closet auger, a short snake with a protective sleeve, reaches clogs in the trap built into the toilet without scratching the bowl. Flushable wipes, paper towels and toys cause many toilet clogs, and an auger can pull them back out.
What a plumber charges
When home methods fail, a plumber clears the line with a power drum machine, a camera or high pressure water jetting. These are the national ranges for common drain calls.
| Plumber drain service | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single drain, typical visit | $111 | $231 | $451 |
| Toilet | $105 | $190 | $275 |
| Kitchen sink | $105 | $161 | $218 |
| Main sewer line | $150 | $475 | $800 |
| Hydro jetting | $250 | $525 | $800 |
| Drum auger rental, per day | $30 | $55 | $80 |
A homeowner who wants to tackle a longer line can rent a drum auger for $30 to $80 a day. Rental machines are powerful and can kink or whip the cable, so the rental counter’s safety instructions and gloves matter.

What raises the cost of a drain call
- Location of the clog. A single fixture costs $231 typical, while a main sewer line runs $475 typical because it needs larger machines and access through a cleanout.
- Method. Hydro jetting, at $250 to $800, scours grease and roots out of the pipe walls and costs more than a basic snake.
- Timing. Nights, weekends and holidays often carry higher rates.
- Access. Lines without a cleanout may need a toilet pulled or a vent stack used for access, which adds labor.
- Repeat clogs. A camera inspection finds roots, sagging pipe or broken sections that cause clogs to return, and repairs follow from what it shows.
- Region. Local labor markets matter: plumbing calls cost around 15 percent less in cheaper states and 25 percent more in expensive ones.
Doing it at home versus calling a plumber
A single slow sink, tub or toilet is a reasonable home job, and a plunger, a hand snake and a bucket handle most of them. Calling a plumber makes sense when water backs up in more than one fixture, a floor drain overflows, toilets gurgle when the washer drains, or sewage smells come from drains. Those are signs of a main line problem. A plumber is also the safer call after a chemical cleaner has been used and the drain is still blocked, since the standing water is now caustic.

Mistakes that make a clog worse
- Mixing chemicals. Different drain cleaners, or a cleaner and bleach, can react and release toxic gas.
- Plunging after chemicals. Splashing caustic water causes burns to skin and eyes.
- Forcing a snake. Pushing too hard can puncture old pipe or jam the cable in a fitting.
- Grease down the sink. Fats harden in cold pipes and catch everything that follows. Grease belongs in a can for the trash.
- Ignoring slow drains. A drain that slows over weeks is a clog forming, and it is easier to clear before it closes.
Plumber quote checklist
A drain clearing quote or invoice should show the following before work starts.
- Trip charge or service call fee, and whether it applies toward the work
- Flat price for the job or an hourly rate with a time estimate
- Method used: hand snake, drum machine, camera or hydro jetting
- Access point: fixture, cleanout, roof vent or a pulled toilet
- After hours or weekend rates, if any apply
- Camera inspection results and video when a main line is cleared
- Any warranty if the same line clogs again within a set period
- License number and proof of insurance
When a licensed plumber is needed
Main sewer line clogs, recurring backups, sewage in a basement and any need to cut into or replace pipe call for a licensed plumber, and many towns require a permit for sewer line repairs. Sewage backups carry health risks, so cleanup uses gloves and disinfectant, and water that has reached outlets or appliances needs the power shut off first.
Cost data note
Plumber prices average two published national sources per line where both exist, following the rule on the methodology page. Hydro jetting and auger rental come from one source. Figures date from October 2026 and return for review after 3 months.
Frequently asked questions
Which method clears a clogged drain fastest?
A plunger is usually the fastest fix for sinks, tubs and toilets. For hair clogs in a bathroom, pulling and cleaning the stopper or strainer often clears the drain in minutes.
Do baking soda and vinegar unclog drains?
The fizzing loosens light buildup and freshens a drain, but it rarely clears a real blockage of hair or grease. Mechanical methods such as a plunger or snake work better.
Are chemical drain cleaners safe for pipes?
Strong caustic or acid cleaners can damage older metal pipes, some plastic fittings and septic systems, and they are dangerous to skin and eyes. Enzyme products are gentler but slow.
What does a plumber charge to unclog a drain?
A single drain costs $111 to $451, with $231 typical. A main sewer line runs $150 to $800, and hydro jetting $250 to $800.
When is a clogged drain a sewer line problem?
Several drains backing up at once, water rising in a floor drain or shower when a toilet flushes, and gurgling sounds point to the main line. That clog sits beyond the reach of household tools.
