Home Improve Guide publishes calculators and cost guides for planning home improvement projects. Every figure on the site is a planning estimate. This page explains what that means and where the limits of the estimates lie.
Estimates, not quotes
Each calculator result is labeled as a planning estimate and not a contractor quote, with the month of the price ranges. A contractor’s price depends on the site, access, local labor rates, material availability, the season and details no calculator can see. The Low, Typical and High columns show a plausible band, and real bids can fall outside it.
Quantities
Quantities assume standard material sizes, typical joints and the waste allowance shown on the page. Manufacturer yields and coverage figures are approximate, vary between products and can change. The label and data sheet for the product actually being used take priority over any figure on this site.
Codes, permits and engineering
Building codes are adopted and amended locally, and the code references on this site describe common model code requirements, not the rules for a specific address. Footings, retaining walls, structural framing, roofs, fire separations and anything that carries load or affects safety may need a permit, an inspection or an engineered design. The local building department has the final word.
Safety
Construction work carries real hazards, including falls from roofs and ladders, trench collapse, silica dust, caustic wet cement, heavy lifting and buried utilities. The safety notes on each page are general reminders, not complete safety instructions. A call to 811 before any digging and proper protective equipment are basic steps on any job.
Prices and regions
Prices are United States national planning ranges for October 2026, reviewed every 3 months. The region factors of × 0.85 for low cost states and × 1.25 for high cost states are broad averages, and prices inside one state can vary widely between cities and rural areas.
No professional relationship
Using the site does not create a contractor, engineer, legal or financial advisory relationship. The site does not inspect property, recommend specific contractors or guarantee any outcome.
